Tongeren is a city in the east of Belgium, near the Dutch border. The Gallo-Roman Museum is housed in a modern building. Inside are weapons, pots and jewelry from prehistoric times to the Roman era, when the city was an important trading hub. In the central square is the 19th-century statue of Ambiorix, a local king who defeated the invading Romans in 54 BC. The remains of the medieval walls surround the city center.
